Bringing the class outside with forest classroom

    Students from the Bertha-Hewitt School planted 600 trees on May 5 in light of Arbor Month to create an outdoor learning environment.

    Teacher Al Hanson discovered the empty lot next to the south side of the school belonged to them and several thoughts came to mind, starting with the disc golf course. His next thought included planting a small forest to help educate students on various aspects of natural science.

    Teacher Mike Barthel also liked the idea and contacted the DNR for the tree seedlings and received them for free. The varieties of trees include maple, oak, tamarack, plum, white ceder and pin cherry.
