    In June of 2017, the remains of Warren Nelson, a WWII soldier were found under a building on Betio Island near Hawaii. Nelson and 1,000 other Marines were killed in action in November of 1943. Nelson was buried in a mass grave along with other United States Marines.

 

     Upon the grave’s discovery by a team of searchers, scientists began using modern technology to identify the bodies. Nelson was identified by his clavicle bone and dental records.

    Nelson’s family was then contacted and notified that his body had been discovered. Jane Baker of Verndale, his cousin, was astonished when she first found out.
