The Veterans Memorial Park located in Sunnybrook Park next to Highway 10 originated over four years ago with a couple of flag poles.
“It gives me goosebumps when I go out there,” said Committee Member Shirley Anderson.
Through grants and donations, the park has progressed with brick being laid by Chris Youngbauer, adding a ship’s mast with all of the service flags, benches and a black granite wall of service members names who have passed on. The park is located against a backdrop of weeping willows and a creek.
The granite wall was installed two years ago and includes the names of over 6000 service members buried in the county and surrounding areas. The radius is from Bertha to New York Mills, Sebeka/Menahga and the Staples area. The committee has 500 more names that will be added to the wall by the Fergus Falls Monument Company.
“Most of those names are from the Sebeka/Menahga area. A couple walked the cemetery and wrote down the names of all the veterans and gave them to us,” said Committee Chair David Ludovissie. . . .
