    Every year, the University of Minnesota awards a farm family from each county in Minnesota for their hard work and contribution to the community and field of agriculture. This year, the Neal family of rural Verndale/Staples received the award for the Wadena County Farm Family of the Year. 

​

    The farm began with Willard Neal, who first purchased the original 200 acre plantation, including the original home. The farm began with dairy cows, hogs, and a few crops, including corn, wheat, and oats.
