The city of Verndale received a call from the state around 6 p.m. on Friday, May 12, and were told that the nitrate levels in city well number one were at 10.5Mg/L.  This is above the maximum contaminant level of 10.4Mg/L.

“A red alert was sent out for the city of Verndale, radio stations were contacted and Wadena public health was called.  Fire Chief Mike Madsen and Emergency Operations Manager Steve Schmitz took point and the Verndale fire department along with some of their family members, the Wadena County Sheriff’s Department and the Verndale Police Officer canvassed the area  to get the flyers [to notify residents] out as fast as possible,” said Mayor Raye Ludovissie.
