Matthew Shamp, 14, of rural Hewitt has returned home from Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in The Cities after a dirt bike accident claimed part of his left leg.

Shamp was riding his dirt bike on July 20 when he struck the family fire pit that was constructed with a tractor tire rim. He hit it with his left leg which caused severe damage.

He was taken to Tri-County Medical Center, flown to the St. Cloud Hospital and then flown to HCMC where doctors worked to try to save his lower left leg.

After many surgeries, too much muscle had died and ultimately the difficult decision was made on July 30 to amputate, just below the knee.

Shamp returned home on August 6.
