465 blocks and 60 hours to build colorful igloo

by Trinity Gruenberg
The bitter cold days of a Minnesota winter tend to keep people inside. But David Cannon of rural Verndale had an idea he wanted to execute which was making a colorful ice block igloo. After two attempts, 465 ice blocks, one repair, and 60 hours of work later he achieved his goal.
Cannon had been watching igloo videos on social media for the past few years and had always wanted to try to build one.
He wanted realistic looking blocks, so he purchased $1 plastic containers that were 12x7 inches, creating four-inch-thick blocks.
He purchased an assortment of food coloring and, with the help of his significant other Sarah Rach and her daughters Siri and Sydney, experimented with how many drops of color were needed to achieve a rich color. Most of the colors took 13-15 drops to attain the color he wanted, and red took 25-30 drops.
Cannon started with 40 containers and made about three batches of blocks. Some of the containers broke in the process, so he purchased more, making approximately 60 blocks at one time.
They began the project in early December. Cannon leveled out the ground, stuck a pole in the center, and used a tape measure and orange spray paint to create a perfect circle on the ground to outline the base of the igloo....
