Bears fall short in two tough conference matchups

by Coach Austin Selvey
The Bertha-Hewitt Bears boys basketball team faced two challenging conference games this past week, moving to 0-4 on the season. Despite competitive play and strong efforts, the Bears fell to Menahga and the Pillager Huskies.
On Monday, December 9, the Bears traveled to Menahga for a doubleheader that featured both the boys and girls teams. The boys engaged in a hard-fought battle but ultimately fell short with a final score of 64-55.
The game was a back-and-forth affair, with multiple lead changes in the first half. A last-second three-pointer by Menahga before halftime gave the home team a 29-22 lead heading into the break.
The Bears came out strong in the second half, managing to tie the game at 38-38. However, they were never able to reclaim the lead.
Key shots from Logan Christenson, Brady Rach, Henry Lockwood, and Jalen Hinzmann kept Bertha-Hewitt within striking distance late in the game. But as the clock wound down, Menahga’s composure at the free-throw line sealed the Bears’ fate.
Head Coach Selvey praised his team’s rebounding effort, calling it “outstanding.” The Bears dominated the boards, out-rebounding Menahga 60-48....
