Bears open the season with a split
by Coach Steven Kvam
The Bertha-Hewitt Bears opened the season by taking on the Parkers Prairie Panthers and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder this past week. The Bears fell to the Panthers 56-31 on Tuesday night before rebounding and defeating the Thunder 55-37 on Thursday.
Bears vs. Panthers
Tuesday was the first game of the season for both teams and the Bears struggled to brush off the dust. The Panthers came out and jumped the Bears to build a 20-point lead over the first 9 minutes of the game. The Bears struggled to deal with the Panthers' active hands in the passing lanes allowing the Panthers too many opportunities for transition baskets.
To get the Bears going Junior Guard Taylor Mitchell took a drive to the basket to finish in traffic before following up on the next possession with a drive and jumper on the baseline. After the Bears got on the board, they took care of the ball much better limiting the Panthers to only 9 more points off Bears turnovers the rest of the game. . .
