Bears show “true grit” at meet in Staples
by Coach Kenny Miller
The Bertha-Hewitt Bears traveled to the Vintage Golf Course in Staples on Monday, August 26 for their first meet of the season.
The weather wasn’t ideal with dew points in the seventies and 100% humidity but the Bears showed some true grit to have a productive day.
In the junior high races Lauren Anderson placed 5th overall for the girls race and covered the 2500 meter course in 11:53. For the boys, Nolan Rach led the way by winning the race in 9:30.4 followed closely by Vance Lockwood in 3rd place. (11:52.5). Rounding out the junior high race was Bently Hauer who finished his first ever cross country race in 11:15 for an 18th place finish.
The girls varsity race saw Kendra Miller lead the way by finishing the 3.1 mile (5k) race in 5th place with a time of 22:03.1. The second Bears runner across the line was Ella Banister in 9th place (23:17.3), followed by Lezah Dean in 13th place (24:18.7) and Mckayla Kapphahn in 31st (29:03.6).
With only having four runners competing they were unable to receive a team score but the Bears look poised to make some noise this season as they should have 7 runners for the remainder of the season....
