Benning Printing & Publishing brings home five awards
The Minnesota Newspaper Association’s annual convention was held in Brooklyn Park on January 30 and 31.
The Independent News Herald received one award and the Verndale Sun received four awards.
For the Independent News Herald Trinity Gruenberg won second place in the “Sports Photo” category with a wrestling photo taken when Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie qualified five wrestlers for state. Judges commented: “Getting a truly great wrestling shot is no easy task. The wrestler holding tight despite getting his eyes gouged tells the story of the match in one shot. Great job.”
For the Verndale Sun in the category “Use of Photography as a Whole” we placed third. This category is not pictured and contributing to the win were Ray Benning, Matt Ganz and Trinity Gruenberg. The judges commented: “Love the use of photos and graphics on the front page.”
Gruenberg was awarded second place in “Sports Photos” for her spring sports photo on the front page. The judges commented: “Really nice photo. Definitely a peak action shot that is tightly composed and the ball is visible as the catcher tags the runner. The photo looks a little out of focus, but not enough to ruin the image. Really nice work.”
Gruenberg also took second in “Portrait and Personality” with a photo of the mutton busting event held at the Wadena County Fair. The judges commented: “Love the kid’s face in this portrait of terror.”
Benning took second place in the category “Photo Story” with the front page depicting Craig Orlando defending the State Title. It was a photo collage of Orlando’s triumphant win at the State Wrestling Championship. The judges commented: “Nice use of graphics with the text and photo layout.”
