Bertha-Hewitt School hears questions and feedback on proposed four-day week
by Trinity Gruenberg
The first of three public hearings for the Bertha-Hewitt School’s proposed four-day school week was held at the Hilltop Regional Kitchen on Monday, April 29.
Superintendent Eric Koep explained why the administration is considering a four-day school week.
Those main reasons include staff retention, attracting staff, financial savings, and academic success.
Staff retention is important as there has not been a fully staffed school in the region for the past five years. Staff who resign typically find a job closer to home, as it is difficult to find housing close by, they want more money, or leave teaching altogether. A four-day school week would attract more applicants.
Koep explained about 80 percent of school districts have been overspending since COVID, as most schools see declining enrollment. The four-day plan could save $75,000-$120,000 annually....
