Celebrating 10 years of the Princess Warrior 5k
by Kat Wiirre
The Tenth Annual Princess Warrior 5K was held on Saturday, September 25 at Tapley Park in Wadena. The 5K-Run, Walk, Roll, Stroll or Crawl was created in memory of Jane Fiemeyer who lost her battle with Leukemia in 2012.
Most of the elements of the event were brought about by a conversation between Jane and her mother Jil prior to Jane’s passing. Jane wanted her legacy to be a 5K race where anyone could participate, even kids with cancer.
Money donated to the event raises funds for families battling cancer. They also provide scholarships to high school seniors, care packages to newly diagnosed cancer patients and donate money to the Leukemia Society.
The morning started off with a heartfelt speech from Jil Fiemeyer, Jane’s mom.
“This is a bittersweet ten-year 5K with Jane’s 18th birthday being on September 27. She would have been a senior in high school this year,’’ stated Fiemeyer.
She thanked everyone in attendance as well as all the sponsors, over 60 volunteers and people who participated virtually. She expressed a very warm welcome to all the Wadena-Deer Creek (WDC) seniors participating in the event.
“I am humbled and honored to know the WDC Class of 2022,” said Fiemeyer.
She expressed how phenomenal the continued support from the senior class has been starting with Jane becoming sick up to today. She gave a special shout-out to local businesses who help make the event possible year after year. . .
