Double blooming phenomenon brings extra color to fall

Residents in our community are witnessing a rare and delightful event this season—both lilac bushes and crabapple trees are double blooming, an unusual phenomenon that has gardeners talking.

Typically, lilacs bloom once in the spring, filling the air with their signature fragrance, while crab trees display their vibrant blossoms only once in the same season. However, this year, some varieties are producing a second round of flowers, a rarity that has caught the attention of horticultural enthusiasts.

Experts explain that double blooming in lilacs and crab trees can be caused by a variety of factors. In lilacs, it is more common in specific reblooming varieties, but proper pruning and favorable growing conditions can also encourage a second bloom....
