75 Years December 30, 1948
• Verndale’s Independent Basketball squad came out on top at the Holiday Tournament at Wadena on Tuesday night when they nudged their old rival, Bertha, in a typical Verndale-Bertha thriller 56-55. Hugo Weber, captain of the night, was the shining hero for the locals as he dropped in a gift shot with five seconds remaining to give Verndale its one point victory.
• Wm. Kelzenberg, local creamery manager, informed up this week that his son, Ronald who is now employed at Austin, is taking over the manager position of the Lake Park Creamery next week.
• The coming attractions at the Verndale Theater: Wednesday and Thursday this week, Judy Garland in “The Pirate”; Friday and Saturday, John Wayne and Laraine Day in “Tycoon”; Sunday and Monday, Clark Gable and Lana Turner in “Homecoming”; next week from Wednesday through Thursday, Merle Oberon, Robert Ryan and Charles Krovin in “Berlin Express.”
40 Years Ago, December 28, 1983
• Frosty the Snowman danced while third and fourth graders sang the song in his honor at the annual Christmas program held in the high school auditorium last Tuesday evening to a full house despite the chilly winds and sub-zero temperatures.
• Winners in the most recent fourth grade spelling bee were: Shelia Mudek, Jennifer Ludovissie, Carmen Bessler and Stephanie Perius. In the spelldown, which followed the next day to determine the overall winner, Jennifer was the repeat winner.
• The seventh grade girls finished their season with a victory over Bertha-Hewitt, 22-10. Verndale led all the way with quarter scores of 10-0, 14-4, 16-8 and 22-10. Their season was almost perfect with eight wins and one loss. The team consisted of: Rhonda Colby, Jill Hosek, Tammy Hahn, Melissa Richter, Brenda Goddard, Paula Bounds, Regene Tarrell and Susan Kopischke.

• Even in the face of tough economic times, the Verndale City Council has decided to give taxpayers a break. Verndale property owners are receiving a 15.45 percent tax break on the city portion of their local 2008 property taxes, payable 2009.
• Tuesday’s activities before the long Christmas break were loaded with fun for the 7th-12th grade students. Activities included a beauty contest which made a girl and guy from each grade compete for the prize. The girl was blind-folded and had to apply make-up to the boy. The boy who looked the best in the end won!
• The river has been here for a long time. We pass it by without even a quick glance, especially in the winter. Bridge decks are icy; it is cold and somewhat foreboding. However, hope springs eternal. The river can hold a symbol of things to come; things that add beauty and hope. Verndale is so gracefully edged by this little river on all three sides. It is like a ruffled collar surrounds Verndale.
