75 Years Ago, May 19, 1949
• Earl Seaton’s track squad finished with a tie for second and third place at the Park Region meet at New York Mills last Wednesday afternoon. Bob Pratt turned in the outstanding performance of the day as he shattered the Park Region mile record as he clipped off 10 seconds of the previous 5:07 record. Pratt raced in with a 4:57 victory.
• The Verndale Commercial Club again had a good turnout at their regular meeting on Monday evening of this week. Two major events will be sponsored by the Commercial Club next month. First will be another Verndale bargain day on Saturday, June 4, and at the latter part of the month, the Wadena County Farm Bureau picnic will be held in Verndale.
• The Waterhouse Garage and Implement Company of Wadena was robbed some time Saturday night or early Sunday morning. The extent of the loss consisted of robbing the cash register and the safe of appropriately $200 and the loss of insurance papers, etc. The safe was found about one mile east of Wadena on Sunday morning by a party hunting gophers. And, on Tuesday morning, they received a call from Kimball that a power lineman had found the box containing insurance papers, etc., near a water hole.
40 Years Ago, May 16, 1984
• The lives of two young people were snuffed out instantly when the car in which they were riding was struck by a westbound Burlington Northern freight train at 9:25 a.m. last Saturday morning. The 1980 Ford Fiesta, which they were trying out, was traveling north on County Road 107, four miles west of Verndale, when it was struck and pushed a quarter mile down the tracks. Authorities believe the car, being driven by Wendell Walz, stalled on the tracks. Pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner were Wendell James Walz, 23, of rural Sebeka and Annette Marie Goeden, 19, of rural Wadena.
• The Brownie girl scouts sang their theme song, “Girl Scouts Together,” then performed the Mexican Hat Dance as part of the entertainment for the annual banquet, awards night, and advancement program held last Thursday evening at the school. Four Brownies “flew up” into the junior division and nine juniors “bridged the gap” into the Cadette group. Brownie leaders are Maureen Baker, Marcia Kostrzewski and Vicki Kern.
• In the absence of Mayor Otremba, Councilman Mark Gades visited the third graders in Mrs. Schmith’s room to inform them about city government which they had studied in Social Studies, such as different types of city government, laws, taxes for support of city services, populations, etc. to help the students visualize the different services, personnel, means of deriving revenue, etc.
