News from Verndale's Past

75 Years Ago, July 14, 1949

• Verndale’s first summer festival which was held on Thursday and Friday of last week proved to be a successful event with large crowds coming here on both days and nights. The doll buggy and pet parade had a good number of entries and apparently was very well enjoyed by the spectators.

• Verndale’s baseball nine lost its second O.T.W. game last Sunday, when Clarissa tipped the locals 3-2. It was the first time the Verndale team had gone down to defeat in the O.T.W contest since Browerville turned the trick in the loop opener. Fred Kampson turned in a magnificent four-hitter as he bested Earl Seaton in a pitcher’s battle 3-2.

• Mr. Kopp had men begin work this week extending the front of his building out four feet. He is also having the canopy removed. His extension will give him approximately 75 more square feet of much needed space.

• Russell Birch was chosen as chairman by members of the District 818 School Board when it met in an organizational meeting as the board’s new year began this month. Superintendent Jim Shereck opened the July 9 meeting to accept nominations for the post, then turned the meeting over to the new chairman, who, in turn, called for nominations for other board posts. Successful nominees were: Bill Fisher, vice chairman; Rodney Bounds, treasurer; and Jerry Nanik, clerk.

• Pat and Carrie Lindblom of Aldrich were named this year’s king and queen by members of the Verndale Senior Citizens Club. They will ride through the Strawhat and Sunbonnet Days parade aboard the Historical Society’s float.

• The Babe Ruth team lost 6-3 in the Mills Tournament, and ended up in fifth place in the Staples Tourney. They played Frazee, losing by the 10-run rule; then defeated Wadena 18-7 and won over Crosby-Ironton in the consolation game, coming out as victors, 7-6. • When Todd Bounds, a normally healthy and active husband and father, began to trip and not be able to “run after the kids” he knew something was wrong. That was in May of 2002. They went to the clinic in Fargo and every test came back negative. In 2007, they went to the Mayo Clinic and he was diagnosed as having primary lateral sclerosis which affects the lower part of the body. This fall his hand became sensitive to the cold and he experienced a lot of weakness and muscle loss as well as a loss of balance. Doctors now think he has a slow progression of ALS or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.”

• On May 22, Verndale Police Chief Jeff Jares was called to the Bullseye Bar after receiving a report that adults were providing alcohol to minors in the parking lot. The report stated he saw two vehicles with minors in the parking lot. He detected alcohol on Christensen’s, age 23, breath and he failed three sobriety tests. Jares told Christensen he was going to be arrested for DWI, and Christensen backed away. Jares told him not to move or resist arrest or he would be tased. Christensen ran toward the building. Christensen’s family filed a complaint with the city for medical bills and an infected wound.

• Local 13-year-old student Lauren Turner of rural Verndale won the IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals held in Edmonton, Alabama from July 3-5. She brought home the coveted international Ironman award earned with her Lucas Oil powered Jr. Dragster.
