News from Verndale's Past
75 Years Ago, September 8, 1949
• Mr. Dan Braiovich is a new member of the faculty and will teach a new course added this year in bookkeeping for juniors and seniors. He replaces Mrs. Earl Seaton Jr. who recently resigned. Mr. Braiovich also teaches two classes in typing, shorthand I and shorthand II. He will direct the high school vocal groups, direct a class play, and will assist in band. He has a considerable musical background which will be a great asset to the department.
• Wm. Eckstein of Verndale, and an employee of the Northern Pacific Railroad in Staples, had the misfortune to fall last Thursday and broke one of his legs at the knee. He remained in the Staples hospital until Sunday when he was taken to the hospital in St. Paul. Bill was helping unload freight from a box car when he stumbled over some stove grates and fell. Mrs. Eckstein, who was on a visit in Illinois, has returned to St. Paul and is staying there with her husband. Mr. Eckstein’s many friends wish him the best of luck in having a speedy recovery.
• Frank Koplin and Morris Lunch took possession of the River Inn at Aldrich on Thursday of last week, September 1, having purchased the business from Don Wruck and Len Lesman. The new owners plan on carrying on the business in the same manner with dances on Wednesday and Saturday of each week and serving food only on dance nights. They will also accept special banquet events, etc.
40 Years Ago, September 12, 1984
• The A.C.R. Peterson memorial scholarship fund is being established by Verndale Pirates alumni and friends of the late Superintendent Peterson who passed away June 30, 1984, while on tour of several Scandinavian countries. Betty J. Schuft Koford of Oakland, California requested the development of such a scholarship fund. Mrs. Koford made the first $25 contribution to the fund while in Minnesota and also met with Verndale High School alumni who had Mr. Peterson as superintendent, coach and teacher during his 10 year tenure.
• Rudy Lohman has never had to go round up his cattle. He’s always trained them to come when he called and that’s what they did as shown in this photo moments before he poured ground feed in a bunk for them to eat. Rudy gave up milking cows last October and now only feeds steers to provide a livelihood.
• Holding tags in this photo for the bus they’ve been assigned are students Johnathan Yeske and Rebecca Callahan. Becky says she doesn’t like all the racket on the bus. Jonathan said he’s learned about caterpillars and even made one. Apparently he’s a good listener. His mother said that at home after the first day of school, Jonathan raised his hand at the supper table seeking permission to speak, saying his teacher had told them always to raise their hand if they wanted to talk.
15 Years Ago, September 10, 2009
• The Pirates football team started their season in prime fashion on Friday night under the lights of Mahlen Field with a convincing 38-20 win over the Brandon-Evansville Chargers. Zack Meidinger needed only five carries to surpass 200 yards, while scoring two touchdowns on the ground. He also added a 28 yard touchdown through the air from senior quarterback Colby Schmidt.
• The Verndale Pirates volleyball team faced a tough Parkers Prairie team in their season opener on Tuesday, September 1. The Pirates struggled to defend the Panthers in their first game with a loss of 8-25. The second game was 16-25. The third game the Pirates battled to the end but finished the night with a score of 20-25.
• As the students head back to school this year they are going to notice some changes. One change is the addition of seven new teachers and another is the 12 new smart boards. New renovation has also taken place in the elementary computer lab with updated and new computers along with a reconfiguration of the classroom which added four additional tables.
