News from Verndale's Past


75 Years Ago, September 23, 1949

• Three local school men, Coach Earl Seaton, Music Director Dan Braiovich and Superintendent G.D Bluhm, attended the annual fall meeting of the State High School League District 24 at Brainerd last Monday evening. Mr. Bluhm was elected for a three year term on the league’s District Committee. Other officers are Superintendent Hanson of Little Falls, chairman, and Superintendent Rud of Crosby-Ironton, secretary/treasurer. The league is composed of 16 member schools.

• Ed Orr reported that he recently sold the old Greeno farm northwest of Staples to Herman and Marie Voeltz of Canistota, South Dakota. Herman is a brother of Ivan and Erick Voeltz. Fred Knapp is at present occupying the 320 acre Greeno farm.

• At the meeting of the Verndale Commercial Club on Monday night, it was voted to sponsor another bargain day in Verndale on Saturday, October 1, of next week. It was also decided at the meeting to sponsor another Halloween party for the children this year. The tentative date has been set for Monday, October 31. And Superintendent Gordon Bluhm, Earl Seaton and Gordon El Blume have been named as the committee to make arrangements.


40 Years Ago, September 26, 1984

• Meet the candidate night was sponsored last week Monday by the Verndale Chapter of the PTSA with three of the four invited guests able to attend. They were: Representative Jerry Graba, DFL; Don Richter, IR candidate for the 12A Representative post and Russ Birch, candidate for the Commissioner District 2 seat. Each was given the opportunity to introduce themselves, state their objectives, then answered questions from the floor.

•The National Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima was brought to St. Frederick’s Church in Verndale last Wednesday morning for veneration (honoring a saint) between 9 a.m. and noon. Members of the Christian Mothers formed an honor guard as it was carried into the church and later recited the Rosary following a Mass. There was a special program by the custodian of the statue.

• Sixth graders filed into the Starlab Planetarium bubble to study the heavens as they would appear after dark. The purpose was to better help them to put into perspective their classroom studies and encourage homework in exploring the heavens on their own at night. The instructor used an arrow shaped flashlight beam to point to the constellation being projected onto the interior of the bubble by a specially designed projector.

15 Years Ago, September 24, 2009

• The American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) travels through the U.S.A. each year participating in sponsored events with a mission to honor, respect and remember those who served, and also those who are now serving. AVTT pays tribute with six separate exhibits and memorials and arrived at the VFW Post in New York Mills on September 11 for the public to view and pay respect to those who have fallen, past and present. A group of Verndale students, fourth through sixth grade, attended the memorial.

• Those traveling on Wadena County Road 23 may have noticed it has now been designated as a Veterans Memorial Highway. According to Jim White from Wadena, a past Post Commander and past District Commander, a dedication ceremony was held on May 16 in Bluegrass on Armed Forces Day where a group of 100 veterans and their spouses took part, along with the Sebeka Legion Post, Menahga VFW Post and Wadena VFW Post color guards.

• The Verndale Pirates football team improved to 3-0 on Friday night as they beat the Ashby Arrows by a final score of 52-12. The Pirates scored early and often as they jumped out to a 30-0 lead after the first quarter. Zack Meidinger scored the first touchdown from 84 yards, while Colby and Amos Schmidt each scored on short runs.
