75 Years Ago, September 29, 1949
• Saturday night of this week will mark another one of Verndale’s popular bargain days which are sponsored by Verndale businessmen. Registration for prizes will take place at the business places advertised in this issue on Friday and Saturday of this week for the mass drawing which will take place in front of the Verndale Theatre on Saturday night at 9:30.
• A large bear was seen early last Thursday morning at the Jim Marus farm in North Germany. It was in their chicken coop helping himself to their chickens. Although Jim shot at it, it got away and went north. The foot prints measured nine inches and it was reported the bear was very large. Fred Kleinke, Leslie and Alfred Kleinke tracked it north and it was seen near the Charles Burgau home.
• Official notice was received by acting Postmaster R.L. Bradford this week that a post office inspector will be in the Verndale office on Friday to officiate the transfer of the Verndale Post Office to the new Postmaster Floyd J. Lepper. Mr. Lepper will take over on Saturday, October 1, replacing Bob Bradford who has been acting postmaster since April 1.
40 Years Ago, October 3, 1984
• Michelle Anderson, daughter of Larry and Ruth Anderson, was crowned homecoming queen on Monday evening in ceremonies which opened a week of festivities culminating with the homecoming game on Friday afternoon at 1:15 and a dance held that evening. Michelle’s escort was Craig Beaver, son of the Don Beaver.
• A special meeting of the city council was held on Monday, September 24 to precede the deadline of September 30 for passing a resolution assuring that the city of Verndale will reinvest the proceeds of the Urban Development Action Grant in community development projects. The grant was applied for by Tom and Beth Yule to help construct a truck stop along Highway 10 with the help of the city council.
• An 1889 illustrated album of biography of the famous Valley of the Red River of the North and the Park Region has been donated to the Verndale Historical Society library by Roy A. Erickson of Aldrich, shown in the picture presenting it to MaryLu McClure, society president. The treasure contains biographical sketches of hundreds of prominent old settlers and representative citizens including Dr. W.N. Morell, E.M. Briotts who built the first grist mill in northern Minnesota at Verndale., and A.S. McMillan, publisher of the Verndale Journal.

• On Monday, September 28, Verndale High School kicked off this week’s homecoming events by crowning the new king and queen, Trevor Enberg and Brittany Kern. This year’s queen candidates were: Crystal Haskin, Brittany Kern, Trista Finck and Heather Hejhal. King candidates were: Clay Cottrell, Colby Schmidt, Trever Enberg and Amos Schmidt.
• The Verndale Pirates volleyball team played a full week of volleyball. On Tuesday, the Pirates traveled to the home of the Menahga Braves for non-conference play. The Pirates defeated the Braves with a three game sweep. On Thursday, the Pirates hosted the New York Mills Eagles. The Pirates struggled to pull together their offensive attack against the Eagles and lost in three games.
• The Pirates football team traveled to Bertha last Friday to take on the ninth ranked Bertha-Hewitt Bears and came away with a 32-8 victory. Verndale scored on its first possession when Zach Meidinger scored from one yard out. Meidinger also added the two point conversion and it was a quick 8-0 lead.
