75 Years Ago, October 13, 1949
• Mr. and Mrs. Lee Sowder didn’t have to go hunting to get their partridge. Last Saturday afternoon, a partridge flew right through the screen on their porch and was easily caught.
• Verndale Theatre attractions for Wednesday and Thursday of this week are Gene Autry in “The Strawberry Roan” plus Friday and Saturday’s double feature “Tarzan’s Magic Fountain” and “the Rustlers”. Sunday and Monday will be Frank Sinatra, Esther Williams and Gene Kelly in “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”
• Since the closing of the Lampert Lumber Yard in Verndale last August, efforts have been put forth on the part of the Commercial Club to keep it open or obtain another yard to come into Verndale, and considerable activity and conversation has taken place. The Commercial Club accepted the property. On Tuesday of this week, James Thompson, president of the Commercial Club, received a clear deed of the Lampert building in Verndale. They invite the community to voice their opinions and suggestions on what to do with the property.
40 Years Ago, October 17, 1984
• Heartland Pageant Royalty crowned last Saturday evening at Longville were: Mary Kaye Wake, Miss Longville, first runner-up; Gretchen May Chamber, Miss Aitkin, crowned Miss Heartland; Erika Schenk, Miss Verndale, second runner-up; and Candice Mace, Miss Remer, chosen as Miss Congeniality.
• All persons with talent who would like the opportunity to express themselves are asked to attend a general meeting for the first annual Christmas Extravaganza, sponsored by the celebration committee as one of its fundraisers. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday,October 22 in the Methodist Church Basement.
• By subtracting three items from the budget, the levy set by Verndale’s school board at its regular meeting last Tuesday, was reduced by approximately $17,000. These are for taxes for 1984, payable in 1985. Because recreation cannot be charged out of education—driver’s ed, summer programs, $993 that was set aside was deleted from the maximum levy. Deleting the cost of a new bus, and hazardous substance removal, as there is no asbestos in the school, the total amount to be levied came to $324,163.

• Those of you who happen to watch the “Food Network” are most likely to be familiar with names like Paula Dean and Rachel Ray, but what about Mary Pierce of rural Verndale? Granted, she has not appeared on the “Food Network”, but for this rural area the Public Broadcasting System is the next closest thing. Pierce was recently featured on PBS on the television program “Lakeland Cooks!” to demonstrate her taco soup recipe.
• Dorothy Kennelly of Huntersville Township has purchased a wind turbine to produce electricity for her home. The Jacobs 20kw turbine will be erected atop a 100 ft. tower later this month by Dace Winkelman, owner of Winkelman’s Environmentally Responsible Construction.
• Area farmers that grow produce lose a percentage of their harvest for various reasons. Be it an over supply because everyone else’s produce is ripe at the same time or possibly a sales and marketing issue. The loss is something that Dave Evert hopes that STEP (Stimulating Economic Progress) can help lesson. STEP is a non-profit working to strengthen the agriculture economy of Central Minnesota. The project will work within a 100 mile radius of Wadena.
