• When the Halloween party last Wednesday night was canceled because of icy conditions, elementary students were taken through the haunted house on Thursday morning. After the kindergarten students, with the help of their teacher, Vickie Smith, managed to get past the ogre reaching for them, pictured above, their attention was drawn to the one below, where the students were wary about what they would encounter around the next turn.

• Pictured, Janet Anderson, dressed as Ruth Bussey, attacked one of the two party crashers of the Mystery Sisters held at the Rob Weiher home last week Monday. Little did she know at the time it was all in the family. The party crashers took their places amidst members of the club, Ruth Jensen as herself on the left, and Noni Stone as Dolly Parton on the right.

• November’s somber gray skies will light up at night with two barrages of streaking fireballs and with lovely Venus, the brightest of the planets. The next full moon, known as the beaver’s moon, will shine on the night of the 8th, and will be followed by the annual visits of the Taurids and Leonids meteor showers. Through it all, Venus will grow even brighter as it heads for a rendezvous with the moon and Jupiter.

• While most dairy farmers make a bee line to their barn at milking time, Dan Middendorf typically hops on his ATV to bring his herd into his yard and up to the barn to be milked. This is about the only time his bessies are under a roof except for when there are extreme weather conditions. His farming practices differ in this way from the majority of dairy farmers and in other ways as well. Since 1994, he’s been keeping the cattle outdoors and they’ve dealt with very few health problems.

• In the first round of playoff action, the number four ranked Lady Pirates volleyball team faced the number five ranked Eagle Valley Rebels on Thursday, October 29. The Pirates were able to run a strong offensive attack against the Rebels to pull forward into the second round of playoffs with a 3-0 win over the Rebels. Trista Finck finished with 17 kills for the night followed by Ashley Richter with 6 kills.

• When Blake Youngbauer turned 18 this past September, not only did he become an adult, he also had another reason to celebrate. Two days before his birthday, he sent in his final paperwork in to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. To attain the Eagle rank is a huge accomplishment, one that he has worked on since becoming a boy scout in sixth grade.
