75 Years Ago, January 19, 1950
• The community dinner served at the Redeemer Church on Monday evening was very well attended with the ladies of the church serving over 95 people a well prepared dinner. Following the dinner, the girl’s sextet of the high school under the direction of Mr. Braiovich rendered two selections which were well received by the audience.
• Voters of 23 school districts of Wadena, Becker and Hubbard counties will go to the polls on Tuesday, February 7 to cast their ballots for or against the reorganization of their districts into one large school district as recommended by the Wadena County School Survey Committee. The area affected is the northern part of Wadena County and adjacent areas in Becker and Hubbard counties most of which are now being served by the Menahga High School.
• Hens will spend less time scratching and more time laying eggs if you rid them of lice and mites. Dusting the chickens with sodium fluoride or a five percent DDT powder will control body lice. Paint roosts and nests with nicotine sulfate for red mites and for lice control.
40 Years Ago, January 16, 1985
• Dale Carr, a former councilman, took the oath of office for his first term as mayor of the city of Verndale at the January meeting of the council held on Monday, January 7. Acting Mayor Roger Anderson conducted the installation ceremony.
• The northeast corner of Verndale’s main street looked desolate this weekend and will remain that way after word went out Friday that Great Plains Supply had locked its doors—without any advance indication. Even the employees had been unaware of this until Manager John Erickson returned that day from a meeting where he learned that the local yard was one of 40 across the Midwest that were closed due to the economy.
• Pat Wagenaar of Park Rapids is Verndale High School’s new learning disabilities teacher. She replaces Linda Johnson Ferguson who was the victim of a pedestrian-car accident while Christmas shopping in Brainerd. Pat is originally from Oak Ridge, TN and has since lived in Cincinnati, OH, and Columbia Heights, MN, where she graduated from high school and she now lives in Park Rapids.

• Over 80% of Americans say they want to improve their spiritual lives during the next 12 months, according to a Gallup poll. The is just one of the reasons that Betty Schlupp volunteers each week to teach Bible lessons at the Assembly of God Tabernacle in Verndale. She has been named the 2010 Minnesota Teacher of the Year by the national Discipleship Ministries Agency of the Assemblies of God.
• Jim Runyan was sworn in during the Monday, January 11, regular monthly meeting of the Verndale City Council. The council has appointed Runyan to serve out the remainder of Jim Ackerson’s term. Ackerson resigned due to employment obligations.
• The Verndale Girls Basketball team started off the new year with back to back games against Browerville on Thursday and Sebeka on Friday. The team played well against Browerville and they led most of the game only to come up short at the end 58-48. The girls played very aggressively and put forth a great effort. Elizabeth Johnson led the team with 13 points.
