75 Years Ago, March 9, 1950
• Mrs. Armella Kern, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Joseph Kern, will appear in an orchestra concert at the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, on Sunday evening, March 19. She is a senior at St. Benedict’s and is active in the school’s musical organizations.
• Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dahlquist completed a deal last week for the purchase of the Ingebret Trovik farm east of Verndale and plan on moving there the beginning of May. Mr. Dahlquist will continue his work as a telegraph operator in Wadena.
• The Verndale Pirates 1949 sub-district basketball champions and 1950 sub-district runners-up are: Billy Desrocher, Billy Fisher, Charles Sharp, Pat Mack, “Butch” Davis, and Everett Dague, student manager Melvin Peterson, Robert Doll, Ron Doll, Frank Roberts, Jim Lepper, Coach Earl Seaton Jr. and Dale Christiansen.
40 Years Ago, March 6, 1985
• Snow removal operations, both by machine and by hand, was the order of the day on Monday afternoon when snow flurries ceased. One couldn’t help but wonder where so much snow could come from in a period of less than 24 hours. Pictured are Fred Klimek and Dick Minnette working to clear the sidewalks in front of Fred’s Grocery and the Municipal Liquor Store.
• Barb Schenk presented Coach Wm. Buckreis with a t-shirt carrying the slogan started by Pirate Joe Otremba as the team’s victories piled up, “Not 17, not 18 but 19 in a row”. She also provided similar shirts for each of the seniors on the team—team manager: Jeff Bergquist, cheerleaders: Michelle Anderson, Tonya Peterson, Erika Schenk, mascot: Michelle Stinar, Pirates: Jim Shereck, Kevin Kneisl, Scott Trosen, Craig Beaver, Asst. Coach Brad Schmidt, Dean Dahlvang, Joe Otremba and Coach Bill Buckreis.
• Booster Jim Runyan presented Cami Carr a check for $50 on behalf of her dad, Bob Carr, who a week earlier, had succeeded in shooting a basket from half court during half time of a Pirates basketball game.
15 Years Ago, March 11, 2010
• Clay Cottrell, who will graduate from Verndale High School this spring, was recently accepted at both the Naval Academy and to West Point along with other colleges. His original plan was to attend a college somewhere near home, but that all changed. While attending his brother’s graduation, Cottrell’s grandfather suggested that he look into the military academies. He is set to leave for the Naval Academy on July 1.
• On Tuesday, March 2, junior Zach Meidinger reached a personal career milestone. In the second half of the game against Nevis, Zach hit a three point shot to reach 1000 points for his career. He became the seventh boy to achieve this feat in Verndale. He added to his total on Thursday night with a career high performance of 47 points.
• Verndale staff enjoyed a 50s show themed “Rockin to the Oldies” last Friday after school. Dick Johnson, the “one man band,” entertained the staff with songs of Elvis, the Everly Brothers and many more from the 50s and 60s era. Malts and popcorn were served by students Tim Kern and Shani Bain. This fun event was a kick-off for the book fair which will be held March 8-11 at the Verndale School.
