40 Years Ago, April 17, 1985

• One of these beauties that are in this photo will be crowned Miss Verndale this Saturday evening during a very colorful pageant for which they and others have been practicing religiously for the past month. They are Jamie Henderson, daughter of Darlene Bishenauer; Lynne Hahn, daughter of Larry and Diane Hahn; Patty Fisher, daughter of Robert and Carolyn Fisher; Lisa Eddy, daughter of Don Eddy and Shirley Eddy; Connie Krell, daughter of Raymond and Judy Krell; Val Luebke, daughter of Earl and Lois Luebke; Shelia Notch, daughter of Ron and Florence Notch; Tonya Peterson, daughter of Leo and Jeannie Peterson; JoNeen Rousslang, daughter of Gary and Kinnie Rousslang and Peggy Hokanson, daughter of Jerome and Jackie Hokanson.

• Naomi Stone of Verndale, home economic teacher at Staples High School, was elected state vice president of the district at the Minnesota Home Economics Association meeting held in St. Paul last month. Mrs. Stone will coordinate the district programs and report at the state council meeting held bimonthly at the University of Minnesota campus.

• Three Verndale Speech Team members will be advancing to regional competition at Wadena this Saturday, April 20. They are LuAnn Finck who finished seventh in drama, Shari McClue who finished third at the district in original oratory and Jennifer Ninneman, who came in fourth at the district, also in original oratory. The first eight winners in each category advance with those finishing ninth and tenth place as alternates.

• In order to better acquaint students with city government, Verndale’s sixth graders have been going through the procedures of forming a town, setting up its governing unit, establishing a bank and other businesses. Members of the Olsonville City Council are Greg Johnson, Ken Baker, city clerk, treasurer; Jacob Schwanz, mayor. Jennifer Gray, Stacy Yule and LouAnn Terveer are faced with a problem about the validity of license applications.

15 Years Ago, April 22, 2010

• Bob Tubandt has been associated with the Wadena Boxing Club for over 50 years, starting his career in the ring in 1959. After ten years as an athlete, he took over coaching in 1969 and has been working the corner for Wadena boxers ever since. This is the second time Tubandt was awarded Coach of the Year. He also serves as Region IV director on the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves Board of Directors.

• The Lady Pirates softball team opened their season on April 8 with a double header conference victory at Parkers Prairie. The Pirates won game one of the double header with a score of 8-6 in eight innings. The Pirates were lead by a strong pitching performance by Jenny Swenson. She pitched all eight innings and struck out six batters and walked only two while picking up the win.

• The National Honor Society recently conducted a clean up and painting project at the Verndale Park. Some of the members painted the World War I Memorial while others painted new sings for the senior center and cemetery. Still others worked to spread fresh wood chips on the playground. The work crew included Jamie Kern, Heather Hejhal, Crystal Haskin, Darian Nodgwick, Brianna Kimber, Hannah Barrett, Amos Schmidt, Nathan Wiese, Derek Hamann, Clay Cottrell, Jacob Perious, Jennifer Hackler and Ashley Richter.

• The annual Verndale Fireman’s Auction was held on Saturday, April 17 with a great turnout. The weather was beautiful, food was good and conversation was plentiful. Bidders purchased items from furniture to lawn mowers, antiques, guns and tractors to an RV camper. The money raised from this fundraiser will be filtered to several funds within the fire department such as the new truck and new building funds and also will be used for necessary equipment and training as needed.
