News from Verndale's Past
40 Years Ago, May 1, 1985
• School patrol members were treated to a trip to the Twin Cities on Sunday to take in the Twins-Oakland game. Those making the trip were: Brandi Kvamme, Nathan Neuerburg, Jacob Schmitz, Jeff Veronen, Kevin Black, Greg Johnson, Stacy Yule, Jennifer Ludovissie, Lori Radniecki, Dana Dougherty, Chad Davis, Chris Dolezal and Christy Richter. Faculty Advisor Roger Olson and Dale Paulsen, representative of the local American Legion Post that sponsors part of the school patrol, were chaperones.
• Two more applicants filed for the two school board vacancies before the deadline last week Tuesday assuring a race against incumbent Rodney Bounds who will be seeking his second term. Filling were Dalene Bischenauer, a relative newcomer to the area, and Jim Runyan, who is a Verndale High School graduate. This year’s election will be held on May 20.
• MIT-TI-QUAB Archery League President Clyde Schmidt is pictured presenting the traveling trophy to members of the Schultz Archery team which finished the season with the total high points. Members also received individual trophies for winning the first half year of competition. They are Roger Olson, Ron Reed, John Anderson, Dave Olson, Chuck Tangeman and Judy Schultz. Winners of the second half were Verne’s Archery team members: Dale Campbell, Clyde Schmidt, Verne Anway and Frank Cherney. Absent were Gary Bounds and Gaylen Carlson.
• The Bluegrass Ramblers 4-H Club won the first segment of Share the Fun held April 19 at Sebeka, and competed again last Friday evening at Wadena against the winner of that group, finishing second. Their portrayal was a home scene of happenings “The Night Before The Fair.” The Out O’ Towners won first with their skit entitled “Fairy Tales” and will take their act to the State Fair in August.

• A grand opening was held at The Anchor Christian Youth Center, formerly The Pirate’s Den restaurant, on May 2 from 2-5 p.m. A ribbon cutting was performed by Mayor Ardith Carr followed by a small ceremony by Pastor David Cotner. It was held inside and they recognized the donation of the building by Brad and Shari Schmidt. On hand to accept the plaque and flowers on their behalf was Shari’s mother, Donna Denny. A $2000 grant was also received from the Walter Goedel Foundation to provide computer equipment for the center.
• Sheri Schmitz and daughter Madison took a minute in between rushes while tending their sale. The citywide garage sales, sponsored by the Verndale Lioness, drew a nice crowd throughout the cold and damp day on Saturday.
• The Lady Pirates softball team suffered another rough loss on Monday, April 26 to the Browerville Tigers. It was the second time in two days that the Pirates lost in extra innings. The Pirates found themselves down by one run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Brittany Kern stole home on the throw from the catcher to the pitcher to tie the game up.
• The elementary spring program for grades K-6 was held on Friday, April 30 with a clown theme. All the students were asked to dress as clowns. It was a wonderful combination of singing, dancing and tumbling, full of energy and excitement. Parents, relatives and friends enjoyed watching the students perform.
