• Fieldwork is in full swing as farmers put in long hours planting in hopes of good crops this summer. Blowing dust Wednesday obscured part of the corn planter being pulled by Don Johnson in this photo. He farms just north of Verndale. By Friday, dust was blowing so badly across highways, vision was nearly at zero. A short-lived dust storm swept through the area early Saturday evening and it wasn’t until Sunday night that this immediate area received relief in the form of rain showers.
• Taxpayers in Minnesota were cautioned today to not celebrate Tax Freedom Day with typical taxpayers nationwide on April 30, but instead wait until May 9, right around the noon hour. Due to a higher state and local tax burden, Minnesotans must remain on the job for another seven working days to meet their tax obligations. Tax Freedom Day is the day when the typical worker would owe no more taxes, if from January 1, 1985 every dollar of income earned was used to pay federal, state, and local taxes. After this date, workers are free to spend their remaining income as they choose.
