75 Years Ago, November 21, 1946
• Coach Earl Seaton and the Verndale Pirates start their 1946-47, 22 game schedule Friday night of this week at Sauk Rapids. What will make this game more than interesting is the fact they are coached by Jack Conley, a former Verndale High School graduate and athlete. Verndale’s team is coached by Earl Seaton Jr., a classmate and teammate of Jack’s all through high school and college. Also add in the fact that Jack’s brother, Roger, will be playing on the Verndale team.
• Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Erickson received a beautiful sterling silver cup last week for their baby, Janet Fay, born September 12. Janet won the cup for being the largest baby born that week. She weighed in at 11 pounds and her name and weight were sent into the Stork Club broadcast program for a chance to win the prize for that week.
• Kenneth Buseth, Hendricks horse lover, made a leisurely trip into South Dakota on his prize saddle horse Silver. Forty to 50 miles was a day’s distance quota. Two tar paper shanties on wagon frames served as kitchen and bedroom for Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wagner in a trek from Menahga to Ortonville where they expect to settle.
40 Years Ago, November 26, 1981
• Seniors on the Pirates cage squad this year are Jeff Paulsen, Mike Hokanson, Bruce Beaver, Todd Pilgrim, Ron Denny and Mike Anderson. They took part in a jamboree at Staples last Saturday and will officially open basketball season at a home game with Motley on Friday, December 4.
• The school library was awarded a book “Medal of Honor Recipients” through Kimberly Falk, Verndale’s speech teacher. The award was made at a recognition dinner sponsored by the Wadena VFW for winners of an essay contest, “Building America Together.” There were five entries, two from Verndale, Laura Carlson winning second and Devon Dougherty, placing third. Mrs. Falk was their coach.
• Cathy McCormick is the only senior girl on this year’s Pirates girls basketball squad and having lost but three seniors last year due to graduation, Coach Ron Randall says he’s really optimistic about this season. “We have experience and only two positions to fill,” he said. Juniors on the varsity roster are Margaret Runyan, Robin Adams, Cam Nelson, Cathy Colby, Shari Denny, Carmen Hosek, Nancy Coats, Melissa Pierce and Shelly Notch. Sophomores are Mary Line and Tammy Krell.
15 Years Ago, November 23, 2006
• The Wadena County Board of Commissioners held a regular meeting and one of their first items of business was the announcement that Wadena County Public Health Director Karen Nelson had been selected for the 2006 Barbara O’Grady Excellence in Public Health Award. The commissioners nominated her for the award two years in a row, and this year she was chosen.
• Air Force Airman David K. Dunrud, son of Thomas and Christine Dunrud, Verndale, and a 2006 graduate of Verndale High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX.
• Since February, Bob Larson has been the manager of the municipal liquor store in Browerville where he also bartends. On weekends he is a part-time announcer and does play-by-play reporting of local sporting events for a Wadena radio station. In between, he is a member of the Bertha City Council and was just elected as mayor in the November 7 election.
