Elora Wagner gets second place at the State Tournament

by Coach Michael Arvidson

The individual state wrestling tournament started last Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.

BHVPP had four boys take to the mat as Adam Grabow took the mat first.

He went down in a hard-fought match to a familiar foe.

Hudson Truax toed the line second and squeaked by with a nail-biter.

Orran Hart and Braden Shamp dominated their opponents for a tech fall and major decision respectively to join Truax in the quarterfinals.

Going into the evening session, the winners would secure medals, and the losers would have some work to do.

Grabow’s morning opponent won giving him new life on the back side.

Truax went down by a major decision and Hart lost a tight one to join Grabow in the wrestle backs.

Shamp positioned carefully against his over-sized opponent and executed the game plan to perfection. He wore him down to go to overtime, then tiebreakers, and Shamp worked hard to get away in the ultimate tie-breaker.

As his opponent fell to an ankle to hang on as the seconds ticked away, the stalling call was made to award Shamp a point and advance to the semifinals.

In the consolation round, Grabow’s season came to a close by another major decision defeat as he lost to the runner-up and 5th place finisher to end his run.

Truax was down by two as the clock was closing out, he hit a quick slide by and ran down the angle as the takedown was given with a second left to secure his win and move him into Saturday.

Hart had a similar roller coaster. After taking a 4-0 lead, his opponent executed a seven point move for the lead. Hart got the turn in the third to go ahead 8-7 and a mat return in the final ten seconds created a flurry of action where Hart was able to hang on and join Truax the next morning.

Championship Saturday was upon us, and it started with the girls as Elora Wagner opened with a takedown and wore her opponent down to secure the fall midway through the second period....
