Fire displaces apartment tenants, damages businesses
On Wednesday, October 20, at 11:17 a.m., the Wadena Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a multi-dwelling apartment fire at 202 1/2 Jefferson Street South in the city of Wadena. Upon the arrival of fire personnel, flames were observed on the east side on the second story of the building. They could be seen from the back alleyway, with heavy fire isolated to an area on the back flattop roof decking and an entryway door.
Prior to the arrival of fire personnel, tenants from inside the building were alerted to smoke filling the apartment hallway, and the landlord attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher before it grew and it was unmanageable.
All tenants were able to escape the building without injury.
Fire personnel set up two engine companies to establish attack lines and water supply.
The first engine was set up in the alleyway and ran an attack line up the staircase that ran up to the back roofing area, attacking the fire from the east side of the building. . .
