Julia Cuchna entertained and educated the Eagle Valley Elementary students this week as she made several presentations on the Antarctien trunk from the Science Museum of Minnesota. Cuchna showed slides and told the students that Antarctica is the largest desert in the world. She told the story of Rod Stieger from Ely, Minnesota who traveled with a group across Antarctica in 1990. The students asked many questions and the trunk’s contents were a fascination to the students.

Two piano students of Wadena music instructor, Wendy Lindlief, competed and were declared winners in the West District Minnesota Music Teachers Association Preliminary Contest held at the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday, February 1. Competing in the Junior B Division, Mark LaVoie played “Duetto” by Heller. He is the son of Randy and Diane LaVoie of Clarissa. LaVoie and Jackie Tellers of Wadena will advance to the state competition at the University of Minnesota on March 16.

The village of Clarissa paid off $8000 of its $111,000 bonded indebtedness during this past year leaving a current debt of $103,000 as of January 1, 1972, according to the village financial statement which was issued last week by Ruben Miller, the village clerk.

U.S. Rep. Bob Bergland this week nominated a Clarissa youth for appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. He is Thomas Baker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Baker and a senior at the Clarissa High School.
