25 Years Ago

August 20, 1997

Clarissa’s Nick Holmquist had his best out of the year—in a starting role for Wadena in the State Amateur Baseball Tournament—as he struck out 12 and scattered 10 hits in the Chief’s 9-4 win over Lonsdale. The victory at Maple Lake Saturday got off to a fast start for Wadena as Scott Seaton belted a solo homer in the first inning to take the Chief’s to a lead they never relinquished.

Ken Helgeson, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Helgeson of Clarissa and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bartelt, Sr. of Clarissa, has been training. Helgeson from Cheyenne, Wyoming has been training hard riding cross country mountain bike. In 1996, Helgeson, a medic at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, won the Armed Forces Cross Country Mountain Bike Championship.

50 Years Ago

August 17, 1972

Melvin Hedlund was appointed supervisor-manager of the Sebeka and Park Rapids Land O’ Lakes Creameries on August 1 and assumed his new duties as of that date.

An unusual picnic was held on Saturday, July 29, when a group of sightless persons and their seeing eye dogs gathered together at Miller’s Resort on Rush Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Roland Johnson and more joined a group of other sightless people and their dogs at the get-together at Rush Lake.
