Historic military convoy rolled through Wadena

A convoy of about 35 antique military vehicles traveled 2,500 miles through the month of October. It started in Thief River Falls on October 1 and ended in New Orleans on October 31, following the route of the former Jefferson Highway.

The convoy stopped in Wadena, at the former parking lot of Pamida, as they traveled through town the first week in October. Eager spectators congregated to catch a glimpse of military history on wheels. 

The Jefferson Highway Association (JHA) group rolled into the parking lot with an array of military vehicles from different branches and various time periods. 

When they departed, they swung by the Wadena-Deer Creek Elementary School before continuing through Staples and on into Camp Ripley for the night. 

According to their website, the JHA came into existence in 1915, and the initial routing was conceived between Winnipeg and New Orleans by 1916.

The “route” meant that key cities and states were defined by 1916, but the roadways connecting those cities were not fully established....
