Honoring their coach

Three 1961 graduates of Bertha-Hewitt High School remembered their Bears basketball coach of 60 years ago at a memorial service recently.

Team captains Mel Boehland, Roger Bailey and Dave Johnson attended the service of Craig Johnson, 83, who passed away on December 15, 2020. The service was held on June 9, 2021, at Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie. He is survived by his wife, Jean, two sons, a daughter and nine grandchildren.

Johnson’s first teaching/coaching position following his graduation from Concordia College, Moorhead, was at Bertha-Hewitt. He later coached and taught at high schools in Pelican Rapids and Crookston, and at Superior, Wisconsin, and then was the head basketball coach at Wayzata for 25 years before retiring. . .
