How common are tornadoes in Minnesota? Record-breaking year for severe storm and tornado warnings

This season is off to a destructive start with back-to-back storms producing tornadoes in areas we don’t typically see them or so we think.
“I’ve talked to many a farmer in rural parts of Otter Tail and Wadena counties who will be amazed at damage to their farm, and claim they’ve never seen anything like that before... at or very near their location, yet they will be well aware of a tornado that hit one or two townships over in a prior year,” explained Greg Gust, National Weather Service, Grand Forks Office.
Clarissa, Eagle Bend, Verndale, and Old Wadena are some of the areas hit by recent tornadoes that have really made many question why this season is so active. We have not seen this many severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings since 1986. . .
