How Safe Is Your Well Water?

Most of us don’t think about the health of our water when we turn on the faucet. If you live in a city or town, your water is part of a water system that is monitored for safety. But 48% of Minnesota households use private well water that is only monitored for safety by the homeowner.

As a homeowner, what should you be doing to monitor your well water? There are several options.

Option 1:

Have an annual checkup performed by a licensed or certified professional. The checkup should include:

1. A flow test to determine system output, along with a check of the water level before and during pumping (if possible), pump motor performance (check amp load, grounding and line voltage), and pressure tank and pressure switch contact.

2. An inspection of well equipment to assure that it is sanitary and meets local code requirements....
