In Focus

For years, people have wanted something done with the Highway 210 and 71 intersection in Hewitt. It has been the location of quite a few accidents. Something is finally happening, but most people are mad about the plan.

The plan, as proposed by MnDOT, is to install a roundabout at the intersection. And most everyone seems to hate this idea. Some have suggested a stoplight. I’m sorry but a stoplight isn’t going to change a thing. People will still blow through the light, like they do now with the stop signs, even though the intersection is lit, and the stop signs have flashing red lights on them.

Another accident occurred at this intersection recently, which proves my point yet again.

Another issue I’ve heard is about semis hauling loads. Roundabouts are designed to slow people down, while keeping the flow of traffic moving. I’ve watched many a semi traverse these with no issue. They also don’t have to come to a complete stop to make a turn.

An issue I do see with a roundabout is how they intend to install one at that location when they have a river and two bridges to contend with? I fear they will have to look at purchasing nearby lots, one of which has a home located on it.

This has happened before, back in 2004ish, when MnDOT realigned the intersection and had to buy out the house that was nestled next to the river, and demolish it. It will be interesting to see what happens. Hopefully, it will not displace anyone.

Clearly, I am no expert on these things. But I am one of those that responds every time there is an accident reported at that intersection.

I am certain the fire and ambulance crews would like nothing more than having accidents at that intersection reduced or eliminated, even it that means installing a roundabout.

I hate to say it folks, but these roundabouts are proven to reduce accidents. While it may take some getting used to, I don’t see any other feasible option.

I would think MnDOT will more than likely have an open house in the future to explain their reasoning and plans for the roundabout.

Regardless of my job as a local reporter and my seat on the city council, I am not the one to talk to about options for the intersection. I have no say, and the Hewitt City Council has no say in what is done with that intersection. The decisions are made by MnDOT.

When more information becomes available, we will gladly let you know. You are more than welcome to voice your opinion. Please call MnDOT. They are the ones with the answers you seek. If you have questions about this plan for the roundabout, please contact MnDOT District 3 at 218-828-5700 or 800-657-3971.
