To the Editor:

National Police Week

May 15-21, 2023

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

• Currently, there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities throughout the United States.

• Since 1786, more than 23,000 law enforcement officers in the United States have died in the line of duty. The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the wall of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C.

• As of December 31, 2022, 410 officers, both recent and historical, have been designated as Official Line-of-Duty Fallen Heroes and will be added to the Memorial this spring.

Let us join together during National Police Week and publicly salute the service and dedication of law enforcement officers in Todd County, and in communities across the nation.
