25 Years Ago

May 21, 1997

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign War of Wadena sponsored a Junior Essay Contest. First place Sarah Rach, second place Jeremy Rach, and honorable mention to Amanda Denny. Sarah placed first in the district competition and will be competing at the state level.

Tracy J. Graphenteen, a student at Bertha-Hewitt Sr. High School, has been selected to participate in one of Minnesota’s premier student leadership summer programs the week of August 3 at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. The Governor’s Scholars Institute, now in it’s 13th year, trains high school seniors from across Minnesota in “creating communities which value all people”.


75 Years Ago

May 22, 1947

The annual school election was one of the largest recorded in recent years, 246 votes cast. Two vacancies with the expiration of terms of Ove Tangen and Wm. Kassube. Woodrow Anderson had 169 votes and Charles LeCount, 157, to win positions on the board to serve with Dick Sagehorn, Wm. Bottemiller, Herman Sundquist, and Dr. C.B. Will.

St. John’s University was the scene of a track meet. Bob Schwantz of Bertha won the shot put event and David Sparks took second in the discus throwing event. Both will advance to the regional competition.
