The first meeting of the year for the Bertha-Hewitt School Board was a short one. Several items of business were discussed and approved. Several students applied for and received approval for early graduation after the winter trimester. These students are Stacey Johannes, Anabelle Boehland, Tracy Graphenteen and Tim Balbach.

The girls' basketball team came into the week wanting to get two wins and improved their record to 7 wins and 6 losses. However, Underwood and Menahga came to Bertha-Hewittt with different hopes. The Bears faced Underwood on Tuesday night and Menahga on Thursday night. The Bears were able to answer from the free throw line hitting 7/8 in the fourth quarter and securing a victory, B-H 46, Underwood 32.

The 1948 March of Dimes of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis ends this week. This is the fifth year of unusually high polio incidence. The responsibility for continuing the research fight against polio and for providing care for those already stricken requires the utmost support of the March of Dimes campaign. The local chairman of the March of Dimes is Miss Emilie Lewis.

The American Legion Auxiliary will hold its regular meeting at the W. K. Bottemiller home with hostess Mrs. Bottemiller, Mrs. George E. Hartz, Mrs. Morris Smith and Miss Genevieve Rapatz. The topic of “National Defense” will be presented by Mrs. Henry Drewer and “Americanism” by Mrs. A. R. Cornell.
