March 18, 1998
Jeremy Rach, eighth grade, and Sarah Rach, tenth grade, both students at the Bertha-Hewitt School, participated in the U.S. Fleet Reserve Association Scholarship program by writing an essay on “What my vote will mean to me”. Jeremy received an honorable mention, and Sarah took first place and received a plaque and a $50 savings bond. Her essay will continue on in the competition. The U.S. Navy, Marines, and Cost Guard sponsored the program.

The Bertha City Council approved the committee's recommendation to hire Dave Cowlishaw as the new Chief of Police effective March 23. Cowlishaw is coming from Hallock, where he was a deputy sheriff for Kittson County. The council set his salary at $1500 per month, a $350 a year clothing allowance, and put him on a six-month probation.

On Tuesday evening, the Bertha Commercial Club will entertain the Bertha High School athletic teams at the annual affair sponsored by the businessmen of Bertha. John Donaldson, formerly Bertha’s great baseball pitcher, will bring greetings to all of his old friends in this community.

Bertha won the sub-district basketball championship held in Wadena. Bertha defeated Henning 71-31 and in the championship defeated Deer Creek 63-38. The team lost to Long Prairie in the district tournament 47 to 42 after defeating them on two occasions earlier in the season.
