News from Bertha's and Hewitt's Pasts


25 Years Ago

May 13, 1998

The Bertha Fire Department responded to a bedroom fire at the home of John and Pat Hodge on May 5 at 5:30 p.m. It is unknown how the fire started. Bruce Sellnow, fire chief, stated, “When they detected the fire, they closed the door and contained the fire which was the right thing to do.” No one was injured in the fire, and fire damage was contained to the bedroom. The remainder of the house sustained smoke damage.

BH fell behind 10-1 when Staples-Motley scored 9 times. The Bears battled back but came up short with 2 runners on base in the 7th. The Bears scored in the 2nd when Billy Ward led off with a single, stole 2nd and scored on Derek Denny’s base hit. In the 4th Eric Blom singled to lead off the inning followed by Billy Ward and Derek Denny each singling.


50 Years Ago

May 13, 1948

The Hewitt junior-senior banquet was held at the Lutheran Church basement Saturday evening and was an enjoyable affair. The place was decorated in red and white streamers and bowls of tulips graced the tables. In order to carry out the Dutch theme the programs were partly in the German language. The Ladies Aid of Trinity Church served the banquet.

The Modern Pioneer Club met at the home of Mrs. Melvin Lorenz with eleven members present. Visitors were Mrs. Bergquist, Mrs. Robert Gaines and Miss Betty Bielke. Plans were made for revealing the “secret sisters” at the June meeting with each member bringing a gift for her sister.
