Last week was homecoming week at Bertha-Hewitt and students were anticipating the coronation of the homecoming queen and her escort on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 22. The queen candidates and princesses had spent the morning at hairdressers having their hair done. Student volunteers decorated the gym with crepe paper, balloons and tiny white lights. But with all this preparation and excitement, there was no coronation ceremony held on Tuesday. At 11:05 a.m. Tuesday morning, Diane Davis answered the phone at Verndale Grocery where she works. Diane said, “A female with a gruff voice,” told Diane, “Take heed. Bertha School is going to blow up approximately at noon.” Students were evacuated to the football field until buses came to take them home.

On Sunday evening, neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Melzer and family gave them a pleasant surprise in the form of a farewell party. At the close of a social evening, a bountiful lunch brought by the self-invited guests was served and the Melzers were presented a purse as a remembrance of the happy event.
