Chief of Police Dave Cowlishaw will take 128 hours of EMT training beginning in January. As a police officer he is required to be educated only in CPR and basic first aid. After completing EMT training he hopes to join the Bertha Ambulance squad. Cowlishaw again asked the council to consider applying for a grant to hire a part-time officer for the city. Zimmerman said, “I’m not totally convinced that we need one.” Mayor Don Booen said even though a grant would cover 75 percent of the officer’s salary, there is insurance, gas, and wear and tear on the car. It is an added expense to the city. “I am not sure we are at the point that we need one. I don’t think we can afford any more.”

Band Director Ken Nelson spoke at the Bertha-Hewitt School Board’s December 15 meeting regarding an opportunity to march in the 1999 Rose Festival in Portland, Oregon. The Bertha-Hewitt Marching Band has been invited to participate in the parade portion of the Rose Festival in June. With a five mile parade route Nelson said it will be by far the longest parade we’ve ever marched in and the toughest. The board voted to approve the June 1999 band trip.
