Growing up, Mike Frank dreamed of being a military man. On June 20, 1995, after his junior year at Bertha-Hewitt School, Frank, son of Mike and Deb Frank of rural Bertha, signed papers to join the United States Marines. Two days later that dream was over before it had a chance to begin. On June 22, while working on the family farm, a high pressure water unit over-pressurized and shot hot water into the right side of Frank’s chest, leaving him with a fist size hole. After three weeks in the hospital, the doctor told him he’d never be able to rotate his arm 360 degrees and never lift more than 15 pounds above his head. He underwent physical therapy and some unconventional methods and once again tried to get into the Marines. He was turned down due to his medical history. He reached out to senators Paul Wellstone and Rod Grams and the state representative. With their cooperation and a waiver signature, Frank was accepted into the Marines.
