The Bertha-Hewitt Spelling Bee was held on Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. Eighth grader Becky Miller placed third, her final word was ‘cavalcade’. Fifth grader Adam Freyholtz placed second, his final word was ‘mastodon’. Seventh grader Amber McGrath took first place after correctly spelling ‘ligament’ to win the final round and ‘intimidate’ to win the spelling bee.

Ecker Feeds removed large items from the HEB Feeds building last week. The city of Bertha hopes to buy the HEB property as soon as ownership is determined. The city council gave Mayor Don Booen the authority to negotiate a purchase price with Ecker Feeds on the city’s behalf.

February 17, 1949
There was a splendid crowd at the Bertha Women’s Club meeting held at the school. Eight girls from Mrs. Sagehorn’s physical education class opened the program with a polka dance. Vocal music characteristic of Minnesota was enjoyed. Nothing could be more Minnesotan than a review of the work by doctors at the Mayo Clinic of Rochester.

Due to changes in routing of mail from the Verndale Post Office, patrons in Stowe Prairie Township lost the services of an efficient carrier, Adolph Johnson, who had served faithfully for many years. He will be greatly missed.
