25 Years Ago

March 3, 1999

The First National Bank building, which houses the bank and Diamond Tool and Engineering, is undergoing a major renovation to preserve the building. The 86-year-old building will get a new roof and a facelift. Bank President Harry Wahlquist said the work being done is the most efficient way to protect the building from further deterioration.

Bertha-Hewitt Boys Basketball Coach Dick Finck was recognized on Tuesday, February 23, for 25 years of coaching. The Sports Boosters hosted a reception after the February 23 game in his honor.


50 Years Ago

March 6, 1949

“The emergency is over,” said A.H. Herbert, division manager of Minnesota Power and Light Company. “Merchants can turn on their signs and all other lighting, shifting can be discontinued and every other curtailment practice may be discontinued immediately. We are still feeling the effects of the worst drought in 77 years but prompt action last fall on our part and the whole-hearted cooperation of many of our customers made it possible for all of us to get through the winter without any very serious inconveniences.”

Announcement was made that Fred Kapphahn, who is currently attending the University of Minnesota Agricultural College, had been awarded the Sears Roebuck Scholarship. The scholarship is an award which is made periodically to an agricultural student who has done outstanding work in agricultural subjects.
