“I remember back in the early ‘30s the pheasants in the fall would fly across our plowed fields 100 birds to the flock,” reminisced Rodney Westergren. “It looked like there were mostly roosters as they showed a lot of red.” Rodney may not be seeing flocks of 100 quite yet, but thanks to the determination of his son, Gary, and others in the rural Bertha area, people are seeing more pheasants today than they’ve seen in 30 years.

Sixth graders Megan Rach, Kevin Denny, Nicole George and Aaron Johnson informed second graders about the harmful effects of alcohol in a program called “Kids Teaching Kids”. The sixth graders lead the second graders in a pledge, “I will not harm my body with the harmful drug, alcohol.”

April 21, 1949
The annual spring music concert which is staged by the Bertha High School Music groups will be presented April 29 in the school auditorium. The concert this year will take on a touch of big time as arrangements have made by the Bertha Commercial Club to broadcast the entire program live over station KWAD.

From Pappy Hartman’s Pioneer Column: The local schoolmarm, Mrs. Chuck Hartung, took these kids on a tour of the business places in town. They found out how to run a bakery, creamery, locker plant and other assorted business establishments. It was sort of a farewell time for the little McIntire girls who are moving to Hewitt.
