In 1970, Betty Kempe went to college. Her sons Brad and Rod were in high school. She graduated in 1973 and taught physical education at Bertha-Hewitt. She coached girls basketball. In 1980, Kempe received her masters degree. Now, after serving as Bertha-Hewitt Elementary School’s administrative assistant the past five years, Mrs. Kempe is retiring.

The women of the Church of God in Bertha hosted their annual Spring Fling get-together and salad dinner on Wednesday, May 5. The featured speaker was Harvey Ronglien of Owatonna. Ronglien was orphaned at the age of four and spent the remainder of his childhood at the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children in Owatonna. The State School was Minnesota’s only state orphanage.

Bertha High School honor students: Bill Bottemiller, valedictorian; Lois Gruber, salutatorian. Other honor students: Phyllis Bluhm, Clara Grewe, Doris Salzwedel and Robert Schwantz.

The South Methodist Youth Fellowship had a clean-up time at the church Saturday. A wiener roast was enjoyed following the work.
