July 14, 1999

Bertha Chief of Police Dave Cowlishaw sponsored a “Guess Your Best” candy dish contest during Dairyland Days. The winners of the candy dish number one contest with 78 candies in it were: Cindy Goepferd guessed 78, second place Troy Westergren guessed 80, and third place Tracy Boehland guessed 76. The winner of candy dish number two with 151 candies in it was Caroline Chaffin.

Tim Schaefer, and Aaron and Kendra Olson found the medallion on Thursday morning in the park by the fire hall. They won $100 in Bertha Bucks. Aaron and Kendra were also the winners of the Bertha Commercial Club bicycle drawing on Saturday night.

50 Years Ago


July 14, 1949

The Bertha Cub Scouts defeated the Hewitt Cub Scouts in a recent battle with an eleven to eight victory. The game preceded a Parent-Cub picnic of both packs at the Hewitt Park. Local Cub Scout officers: pack committee men—Mr. Ptratz, Mr. L. Wendorf, Mr. Oscar L. Johnson, chairman; Mr. Cornell, treasurer. The Den Mothers—Mrs. H.R. Sundquist assisted by Mrs. Potratz, Mrs. C.B. Will and Mrs. Cornell. W.F. Ratzlaff is cub master, assisted by Mr. Arnold Kujath.

Sunday afternoon brought no joy to the Eagle Bend baseball team as Bertha traveled down to humiliate them before a home crowd by a score of 21 to 1.
